Obstetrics and Gynecology Department

Since the establishment of Faculty of Medicine in Ibrahim Basha University (currently Ain Shams University) in 1950, the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology took over the duty of teaching the science of obstetrics and gynecology according to the international standards. In addition, the department offered medical service to a wide sector of the Egyptian women.

Over a period of 70 years, a multitude of scientific figures took over the position of the Head of Department, starting with Prof Roshdy Ismail (1949-1954); and the department’s distinct members played a major role in teaching and training thousands of obstetricians and gynecologists in Egypt and the whole middle east.

At its establishment, the ASU Maternity Hospital constituted a part of the current building of the ASU Pediatric Hospital (about 140 beds divided among 4 units). In 1986, in the era of Prof Roshdy Ammar, the current separate building was opened, which holds 476 beds.

Head of Department

It gives me great pleasure to be the head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University. This ancient department, which was established in 1949, provides great services to the women of the Egyptian community, whether in the field of gynecology and its special operations, or normal and complex deliveries that require skilled interventions. This is in addition to its primary mission of educating undergraduate and postgraduate students to graduate skilled doctors at a high level of professionalism and workmanship.

We all in this department feel loyalty and belonging to it, and we pledge to God to make every effort to raise this department and thus raise the Faculty of Medicine, the prestigious Ain Shams University, and insist that we transfer our experiences and knowledge to successive generations to be a beacon of science and spread it all over the world.

Therefore, our mission is to educate, serve patients, and raise the name of our esteemed department, and thus our faculties… Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University.

• Teaching

Teaching is carried out by a faculty of distinct members, in addition to a number of visiting professors from many countries around the world (including Germany, UK and USA).

• • Undergraduate teaching: the department teaches the basics of obstetrics and gynecology, and basic clinical and surgical skills, that is essentially required by general practitioners, through lectures, clinical rounds and practical training in skills labs.
  • Postgraduate teaching: the department grants the following postgraduate degrees:
  • Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • MS in Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • MD in Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Special Diploma in Infertility and Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART), Urogynecology (pending) and Endoscopy (pending).
• Medical research

The department conducts observational studies and clinical trials in the different domains of obstetrics and gynecology under the supervision of the department faculty members and Research, Ethics and International Publishing Committees.

• Scientific meetings

The department organizes a weekly scientific meeting for all lectures, assistant lecturers and residents for presenting the weekly hospital case report and discussing it with a committee of professors and assistant professors.

• Medical Services

The department offers basic and advanced medical services to a wide sector of Egyptian women through:

1. Outpatient clinics: including general obstetrics and gynecology clinics and specialized outpatient clinics (Infertility clinic, recurrent pregnancy loss clinic, family planning clinic, gyne-oncology clinic, urogynecology clinic, diabetes with pregnancy clinic, heart disease with pregnancy clinic and Safe Woman clinic).
2. In patient department: it holds about 476 beds divided among 6 general units.
3. Special units: these entail:

• • Gyne-oncology unit
  • Early cancer detection & Hysteroscopy unit
  • Laparoscopy unit
  • Infertility & Assisted Reproductive teaching (ART) unit
  • Urogynecology unit
  • Ultrasound & Fetal special care unit

1. Emergency services.
2. Delivery suite: it carries out about 13,000 deliveries annually, through operating rooms equipped with all facilities required for management of different and complicated obstetric cases and emergencies. This is backed up with an independent blood bank for ASU Maternity Hospital.
3. Gynecologic operations suite: it carries about 3,000 operations annually, through 9 operating rooms equipped for performing all basic and advanced gynecologic operations, including gyne-oncology operations and operative endoscopy.
4. Obstetric ICU unit: it holds 16 beds equipped for the management of all critical obstetric and gynecologic cases.
5. Neonatal ICU (NICU) unit: it contains 45 beds equipped for the management of all critical neonatal conditions including hypothermic therapy for cases with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). An extension for the NICU unit is under construction, that would increase its capacity to 68 beds.

• Community service activities

The ASU Obstetrics and Gynecology department shares in many medical tribes to the rural areas across the different territories of Egypt, e.g. Halayeb and Shalaten, Damietta and El-Wahat.

• Work shops

The Obstetrics and Gynecology department organizes a multitude of workshops all over the year and associating the annual department conference, including:

• Basic and advanced ultrasound workshops
• Basic Urogynecology workshops
• Operative vaginal delivery workshops
• Basic and advanced laparoscopy workshops
• Hysteroscopy workshops
• How to get published workshops

Department Conferences

Over 23 years, the ASU Obstetrics and Gynecology department organizes an annual international conference (ASOGIC), that presents the latest research papers and the state-of-art advances in the field of obstetrics and gynecology. In addition, several independent conferences are held by the department special units all over the year.
