Multiple Sclerosis Unit

• Ain Shams MS unit was established in 2013 serving more than 3500 patients. The unit features two Day-Care rooms with 7 beds in addition to its outpatient clinic.

MS Registry:

• Full registration of all MS patients encountered with medical number and ID
• Both hard copies and electronic medical records are implemented including the international MS-BASE and Egypt MS Network.
Training, continuous medical education and scientific activities

Achievements:

• The Ain-Shams MS unit has the largest local registry in Egypt with more than 3700 cases with full documentation.
• Egypt is ranked number 7 in the patient enrollment by country in the largest international MS register (MSBase) with 80% cases from Ain Shams.
• The unit took part in several international phase III trials. It is the only MS unit in Egypt to participate in all phase III trials in which Egypt participated in.
• Ain Shams MS unit signed a cooperation protocol with the National Health Insurance and played a major role in achieving full governmental imbursement of Interferons, Fingolimod, Teriflunomide, Rituximab, Ocrelizumab and Dimethyl Fumarate.
• Dr Magd Zakaria is the first neurologist from Egypt to publish in the multiple sclerosis and related disorders (MSARD) journal (which is one of the top journals in the field), and his first article was awarded as editor’s choice.
• He later published many article in these journals and became member of the editorial board. He was also the only one from Egypt to be chosen in the board of the following prestigious international societies: MENACTRIMS, Brain Health Organization, Multiple Sclerosis Global Advisory Network (MSGAN), international medical and scientific board (IMSB) of the multiple sclerosis, and Multiple sclerosis International Federation (MSIF). In addition, he was the only invited speaker form the Middle East in the biggest international MS conference (ECTRIMS) which was held in Stockholm, 2019.

Clinical Services

• Thorough medical and neurological assessment including EDSS rating
• Detailed revision and documentation of patient investigations
• Prophylactic and relapse treatment plans tailored for each MS patient implemented under supervision of unit’s highly specialized staff
• Management of complications and associated symptoms through a multidisciplinary team in different specialties
• Continuous follow up and documentation of patient’s condition and new events
• Patient and community awareness (one on one in regular, community events and patient support group meetings and online)
• Liaison Medication
• The outpatient clinic works 5 days per week (Saturday-Sunday-Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday) and serving an average of 800 patients per month, and is responsible for around 300-400 state funded reports monthly
• The day care serves around 300 patients per month
