Faculty of medicine Ain Shams University was established 1950.
The nucleus of the department of Neurology and Psychiatry was established 1945 when three staff members of Neurology from Cairo University decided to share the vision of Ain Shams University at that time which was mainly modernization and enlightenment. They were Prof Abbass Helmy, Dr. Saad Annan and Prof Mahmoud Mostafa.
With the help of graduates of the new faculty of medicine, they were the pioneers of a new school of Neurology and Psychiatry in Egypt. The list is glorious and included Professors; Prof Emad Fadly, Prof Yousof Abu Zeid, Prof Ahmad Okasha, Prof Samiha Abdulmonem, Prof Mostafa Kamel, Prof Talaat Abdulhamid, Prof Zeinab Bishry, Prof Adel Sadik, Prof Farouk Loteif, Prof Abdulmonem Ashour, Prof Anwar Etribi, Prof Mohammad Banouby, Prof Amira Zaki, Prof Affaf Hamid, and many other generations.
1960
The department has been offering a Diploma of Psychiatry and Neurology, a Master of Neurology and Psychiatry, a Doctorate of Neurology and a Doctorate of Psychiatry.
1962
A Neurophysiology unit was established.
1964
A subunit of Psychiatry was established. They retained their autonomy to build up a new school of biological Psychiatry, but kept their relation to the mother department administratively to assure proper scientific and training programs for both neurologists and psychiatrist graduated from our department, which distinguish them among our national and international colleagues.
1966
A unit of Physical Medicine was established offering a Master and a Doctorate of Physical Medicine. In 1983, members of this unit formed the department of Physical Medicine and Rheumatology.
1969
A unit for Muscle disease was established.
1984
A unit of Geriatric Medicine was established and run by Prof Abdulmonem Ashour. In 1994, he and Prof Banouby established the department of Geriatric Medicine IN ASSOCIATION with a Prof of General Medicine and a Prof of Public Health.
1988
A unit of Neurology in Ain Shams Specialized Hospital was established.
1990
The first stroke unit in Egypt and the Middle East was established in Ain Shams Specialized Hospital.
1996
A Neurogenetic laboratory was established.
2000
A Neuro-critical care unit was established in Ain Shams Specialized Hospital.
Since the establishment of the department, outpatient services have included two clinics for general neurology and two clinics for general psychiatry. Since 1992, a number of specialized clinics has been added. This included clinics for; epilepsy, headache, muscle diseases, multiple sclerosis, involuntary movements, and pediatric neurology.
During the years from 2010 till 2020 the department established many service and research subunits including; Multiple Sclerosis units, Involuntary Movements unit, Epilepsy unit, a new Stroke unit in the old hospital, Nueurointervention unit, Neurorehabilitation unit, Neuromodulation research unit, and a Telemedicine unit.
